White
I always remember how you looked
the night I lay sick in your bed.
There were three faces
white with anxiety, concern.
Spheres in front of the linen press
whose open contents clung like ivy to orderly shelves,
that grew white tentacles of sheets,
threw down leaves of linen pillow cases
onto the white slipped floor.
In my pink pyjamas I passed you
walked down the white oak staircase -
careful not to knock the four
brass candlesticks on their white ledge
beside the banister rail -
I crept unseen into the garden
(where your table lay abandoned
covered by a white lace cloth)
the night grass dampening my feet,
looking up I tried to escape.
I was recalled by the memory
of the white faces of three women
and someone who had held my hand
and knelt at the head of the bed.
