RUTH YORCK is German by birth, but is now American and lives in New York. An earlier story by her appeared in The London Magazine in March 1959.
R. D. LANCASTER was born in London in 1922, educated at Latymer Upper School, Hammersmith, and Peterhouse, Cambridge. He served in the Royal Artillery between 1942 and 1947.
FRANCIS KING is the author of several novels, his most recent being The Custom House (Longmans).

The Viceroys is to be published shortly by McGibbon & Kee, in Archibald Colquhoun’s translation.
VIRGIL THOMSON, the famous American music critic and composer, delivered the text of his essay Music Now at the 1960 Ceremonial of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, by whose permission it appears here.
VAGN BORGE is Professor of Theatrical History at the University of Vienna. His book, Weltmacht Film, has been published in several European languages.
BRIGID BROPHY is 32. A former classical scholar at Oxford, she is married to Michael Levey and has a small daughter. She has written novels (Hackenfeller’s Ape, King of a Rainy Country), and her latest book, Black Ship to Hell, has just been published by Secker & Warburg.
