I can’t take any more of this crap, he said, throwing the book (a critical commentary on Swift) across the floor. I rescued it. What you mean, I said, is that the language is a barrier; the ideas interest you but the terminology’s too much. Don’t let it get to you.
Like it? Stuff it, he said. If I have to wade through crap like that, forget it. Listen. His teeth were clenched. Seizing the trembling volume he read aloud: “Swift’s scatological preoccupation with faeces leads/ To a dysfunctional use of metaphor which/In its accumulation of waste verbiage resembles/ Nothing so much as the crypto-excrement it parallels.”
Now tell me that’s not crap, he said.
