Keith Jarrett "The Köln Concert"
An early morning shaft of sunlight
bruises the carpet incandescent gold,
my stylus walks on air, then submerges
into Keith Jarrett live at Köln.
Cutting into its coded furrow, the notes
rise behind it and fall away like sea gulls
following a plough. Fine piano sounds
trickle and stand, follow and flow. Down
the stairs she comes in a black dressing gown,
crushed velvet falling, then falling again;
then she enters the room.
Her eyes Sunday bell clear, concerto austere,
iced diamonds in a soft face, refracting blue.
“New record,” I say, looking at her, joylessly.
She walks to the kitchen as my voice chills me.
“Yes,” she utters in a guillotine sharp key.
As she leaves, the notes follow and flow in
the wake of that diamond plough. Sound
rebounds with love through a slammed door,
with trickling idioms struck from piano keys,
that follow and flow and fade in the distance
as they chase in despair love’s evanescence.
