Cheap Day Return
Our summer train shimmies out of Waterloo
swinging square hips. A plane floats on the sky,
a slow parade that even now feels like a blessing.
It writes white, a metal finger raising
a pale weal on the sky’s blue skin.
We spin out on the starred spokes of track
to the tangled locations of southern England.
The plane heads west, heavy and silent.
And out in the counties, the silver birches slice
Kent’s green cloth into bunting, to flap
at the trackside, waving at trains. When I play
the second card of my orange pair,
the trees hang like ropes, in the dusk.
