Reef
I never believed
I’d be safe in the sea
without you,
but I risk the half-mile
to the reef and back, float
over purple fans
and hunks of coral
sinuous as the human brain.
Once, in Maui,
I hovered above
as you freed an eel
tethered in strands
of fishing line -
no tools but courage
and your hands.
You never saw an octopus
or squid, though
in waters we traveled
there were many.
Some creatures demand patience
Dear Heart,
but you were restless,
ready to move on.
