To Dvorák’s Cello Concerto, in B Minor
And the whole thrown, threshing chaos of it
can seem to act out to a soundtrack
as if responding to lip-sync or choreography
or the reception of good news, so every part
seems to sing to every other part which seems
to sing back, everything sings to everything:
caught in the spell of the cellist you
forgive the world its many wheezy indiscretions
and learn to notice the dog-daisies rocking
their raft of light through the window, also in the spell:
they remind me of the latest segment of crowd
swept up in the wave, responding then relaxing.
No they don’t. They remind me more
of the latest note on the cello about
to sprout a yellow heart and be born
in a shatter of petals, joining the thick swathes
of haulms that brush the summer dust at will
backwards and forwards across the glass.
