Letters
‘. . . in the cool villas
the writers argue all day
on money and art,
the fled city,
gods left behind,
the rate of interest,
the radical . . .
the bourgeoisie . . .’
The land is late.
The land is lying in wait.
‘The plough we bought it seems
is not the right kind.
Or the land is wrong.
Tomorrow we drive to Babylon
for seed and fuel,
and wine and, hopefully, some grass . . .’
The woods draw near.
The woods are growing very queer.
‘Well, if you’re going in, please ask,
how long have we been here,
how long we have to stay?’
