My Mother's Trinket Tray
This trinket tray
given to her as a young girl
by her mistress at the Big House
where she skivvied and sang,
was the first fancy thing she owned.
This small, Coalport china dish
which held her clips and rings,
stray buttons, hatpins, unstrung beads;
her tiny silver thimble, size five
set her heart beating
for the good life – a sailor husband,
adventure, the city lights.
When widowed by war,
for years it held her pearls, her poppy,
her tear-drop earrings;
this delicate vessel,
gold-rimmed, brimming with
her life.
