Offend her, if you must, with random women,
drink, drugs, thievery, or lay nations waste —
these she may tolerate as venial, but
once boast of cunning or inflate your taste
into a principle of separate rule,
you’ll feel the downturn of that sovereign hand,
and, old or young, cold scholar or hot fool,
will tumble, gaunt and wordy, with the damned.
