Letter from the Mountain
Living way up here
what can I tell you?
That I am glad
to be above your struggles,
that my bones are still
unfrozen, and that my flesh
continues to hang together
about its spiky rod?
Built to box-out trouble
this cabin on a rock’s lip
has been a haven for me
but a strange journey began
inwards when I woke
one rain-lashed dawn.
Having no-one here to sound-off
it was not long before the whisky
made a firm friend, and my soup-pan
warming on the stove became a presence.
I’m rapidly losing it under this sky
of terrible planets. The omens are bad.
I’ve begun talking to candles.
This is my last letter to you.
Please pass it around but draw
no definite conclusions.
My signature’s an empty circle
sounding with rumours.
Can you hear the hard weather?
