Carrying On
Your black handbag usually hangs
from the carver chair behind
the dining room door: dropped
elsewhere it feels like part
of you gone astray;
and I dread to think of everything
you rely on crammed in there:
cards, addresses, change, assorted
pills, and make-up, packed out
with dead tickets and bills.
It’s the only bit of you
that rests as you try to
settle the children, bake, iron,
read your mail, endure a phone call,
snatch breakfast before lunch.
Grabbing it releases you to go out
with all you need; as it did
that last Mallorcan night,
with its suppleness, reek of tan,
and the way it swung so lightly.
