The rebirth idea
(It is ideation of ego, of self,
which prevents the realisation
of Nirvana…and so the
Wheel of Life continues. Tibetan
Book of the Dead, W. Y. Evans-Wentz)
Where is the winter always going back
through its unsettling settling down?
Blue smoke blocks the air, the green
shows only its black shadow, and soon
the Mons angels will appear
over the wet usual streets.
The first snow sugars old photographs.
The gaslight fizzes and haloes. You
and the dog that ran mad are there.
And I swear I have not made these up
from old stories of old relationships.
Where is the winter always going back
through midwives to its bad moment?
It is here in an unbroken line to where
we are looking from. Our voices
freeze before our mouths are open
and there are places everywhere
still trying for a child’s first sound.
