Incomplete Family Photograph
You can’t do everything wrong,
although they say he tried.
He wasn’t there
when they took the picture,
the rest surrounding gran;
he wasn’t there
later.
A continent away, he heard
that Arnold had the cat
and Jessie had a place
with a warden and a bell,
but it was the furniture
that told him she was gone.
The tears were six weeks late.
Sometimes you never hear and
sometimes you hear fifth hand.
