Reversal
I can see now it was a mistake
to back my car out of the drive.
Since then the road looks historic
and the future’s in the mirror, blurred.
I’m tempted to pull over
but the hard shoulder’s bumper to bumper;
full of memories, badly parked.
Miles ago I saw my husband
thumbing a lift. At least this time
I knew well enough not to stop.
At each junction the towns grow paler,
the hotels candy pink, baby blue
buildings for children.
When I reach your house
you’ll be straight backed, talking clearly
in the lawn print dress you always wore.
We’ll sit outside for hours,
watch the shadows shorten.
Tomorrow you’ll be playing alone
on the swings, sailing backwards
or reading stories from right to left.
You won’t have to miss me,
by the time morning comes
I won’t even be imaginary.
