Sambre-Oise Canal, 1918
At sunrise light returns,
to walk the full weight of frontiers.
No storm to shatter the silence,
or the fictions of this loneliness,
careless disquiet of bone.
And the bodiless presence of flesh
is blanched by an endless
haemorrhage of absolution.
In this country of impossible peace,
temporary truths, all is known
of absences, in each bright day,
forgotten names among dead grass.
