On a Mantelpiece, 1873
The cranky, red-faced baritone
Challenged the roof to rise a bit.
An old, old woman, hobbled, rude,
Addressed the fire with her spit.
The quiet one said: I’m a fair maid,
Of Staffordshire, whose father died...
The young man, her companion piece,
Suggested it was otherwise.
A farmer, whiskery and rouged,
Laughed suddenly – a thunderclap
That caused the mantelpiece to jolt
And all the figures to collapse
In shards upon the maple floor...
And that’s the scene that met my eye
When I crept down the stairs at dawn,
With spills, to jolly up the fire,
And set the breakfast things, through yawns.
