The Angel Puppet's Hair
Forget the old theologians -
this angel has gender.
Look at my hair, she says,
as if I haven't already,
as if I could miss it.
No man has hair like this.
No woman, either, I think.
No ordinary Monday morning woman.
Her hair is poppy
entwined with gold,
and coiled, tactile.
Made of hemp, she says.
When I stroke her hair,
I'm little girl again,
and a Czech peasant woman
in the candle-lit corner
of a cold church.
