Pat a cake pat a cake
When crow’s feet have danced upon their bodies,
covered and humming in shallow sleep
like telegraph wires, this love of sweet things
might appear infantile. Yet she dreams of biscuits,
various novelties; a dinosaur, a vampire bat,
an iced heart. Each has significance
and seems to boast, “Eat of us and you will feel
the benefit of what we portray.”
Before they cooked their first meal for two
they attended, in the darkened kitchen,
a coronation. Four quivering
blue gas diadems effused an aqueous light
by which they kissed. She rarely bakes these days,
but buys into the symbolism of mass production.
In her dreams, a fantasia of biscuits makes the slow
distinguished journey of the catafalque, into the oven.
