Upon the shore I wrote her name at noon
and in spite of saltwater did adore
the sound’s rewrite so relentlessly soon.
Yet child, said she, why write what sea obscures
for I am as sand, these are nature’s laws,
soon my young face against rocks disfigured,
my mind to dust, whatever one endures:
we are but mortal, our fates delivered.
Be it so, said I, that life once withered
upon this earth soon vacates memory,
our still presence neither felt nor shivered.
But if your name is eaten by the sea
then upon this page lives it through and through,
my love immortalized, your song renewed.
