Gold For My Grandfather
Saw you on O’Connell Street, or
someone very
like … white hair
skimming tanned flesh,
drifted snow on brick.
Gold-tooth flash -
for a moment it was you.
Laughing, peaty
angels fled
O’Connell’s plinth, shed
bronze skins, fogging
sunglasses worn by
passing tourists. Rosey
seraphim, their
heroic shells split, dipped
air.
‘Feck!’ Gasped
old man selling apples as
coaly swansdown, cracked
from the liberator’s column, soot-
smudged Cleary’s windows.
All in a gilt-tooth’s twinkle, my
Grandfather’s arms
rasied in farewell like
Jim Larkin’s.
Seen on O’Connell, or
somewhere very like.
