Oz Hardwick
Armada
Upturned boats, soft planks
greening amongst reeds, beading
peeled and cracked, oars lost,
bob like helpless, legless beetles.
Only the sun is golden, glancing
from sodden wood, flood damaged,
left behind. Who once crewed
these cast-off barques? Where are they now?
Clouds gather, wreckers on the shore,
pirates of treasured days, plundering
light, gunning thunder, lightning
drawing its ragged cutlass tightly
to the throat of evening, cursing and spitting
as ghosts return to blackening helms.
