What I Got for Nothing
the aimless days
came in an unmarked envelope, just like a circular
or some worthless coupons;
I didn't want them really, didn't open
the thing till noon, then they fell out on the rug;
I guess I shook too hard or slit the envelope
in the most improper way
the aimless days
stood in a corner, out of the way, almost unused,
or sometimes walked about the yard
half in thought or less than half amused
but I didn't like them really; kind of like a dog I bought
then thought was silly but had to keep it anyway
as there was nothing else to do
the aimless days
were found around the harbour, arriving or departing
under the clear sky of sailing;
I waved them off; or welcomed if they took my hand,
but I thought the cargo should be something else
and didn't understand the aimless days;
most people like them, by the way.
