We’d stop on the hill above the dam, on the ridge not far from Mulla
Mulla
or the little rise to the western side of Dingo with its view of hills
and Mum would know straight away which direction the homestead
would face.
Dad paced out rectangles and there was talk of where they’d sink a
bore
and where the soil was best for growing vegetables
while the dogs and the little kids ran about between gidgees and
clumps of mitchell grass.
Around sunset we’d bump back over the paddock and along the dirt
tracks in the jeep
to the hut and roast beef on willow pattern plates,
the chooks shuffling and awking beneath us under the floorboards of
the verandah.
