Rosemary Palmeira
To welcome the light
Neither as brief sunlight
after clenched winter
nor the lingering doze
of blissful summer;
it is a stronger sun
dazzling, lime-sharp
fierce heat, breath
taking
a brightness to hide
away from
it obliterates weaker distinctions
burns up motive and action
shows up deficiencies
in the harshness of black and white
such blind white light
slicing the shadow in two
a single drop of bleach
upon a canvas of colour
here riches are saturated
and idols disempowered
the stripped soul
bares its neck to the blade
welcome then, the light
distinctness, the knife.
