well it was later that I left towards the place people
always go on such occasions by which time the
immediacy of the outburst had been modified to
fragmentary recollection discarded emotion filtering
through
the train curving out from the city
into the open country
recreates all the journeys previously taken. identify each
by its predominant colour
or pressure or speed
now more clearly I add perspective to the dimensions of violence
defusing with the aid of retrospection. the pill I swallow
expands like the future of a bewildered generation but I would
hesitate to suppose beyond that, suddenly I believe in
the presence of oxygen and ruined monuments
of little significance I believe implicitly in the
other side of doors and the enchantment of the views
through the windows of all the houses I have entered
being calm and rational reasonable and composed
experts authority and finally subdues
the absurd desire to scream
