Dinner
and then she rose from the table,
tucked her dark hair into the collar of her coat
and was gone.
What is left when someone
you do not know
walks out of your life?
Lovers are easier, you have shared memories;
Fighting and sunsets, cottages in France,
and the day the car broke down.
But the dark one; Was she someone's friend?
A colleague? Or the girl
who used to live in the upstairs flat?
Go, stranger, before we are lovers;
you are safer in your warm coat
wrapped against the chill wind.
