Gathering
Why gulls gather and prod
at the pier’s lashed ember,
when shoals ripe for freezing
have slumped into crates
and crates have been sealed
with the mystery of truck routes,
I can no more bring to focus
than the horn manifest
in the wind’s empty mouth
howling at the pier of myself.
