Pause
Midnight. Icy. The streets quiet.
Cycling home from Fran’s I pass your flat
and stop at the side of the Essex Road.
A moment that cusps from today to tomorrow.
A slight loss of grip. A clear way ahead.
Above the shops your light is out
on your quiet night in doing laundry.
I see you asleep float out of the window,
bright and warm in your duvet cocoon,
suspended in air like my cloudy breath.
I’m heightened, alight from Fran’s hot vegan cooking,
spiced by the grass from her Hackney back-yard.
When she and I dished our loves in her kitchen,
I found myself not so much telling as singing,
and out by this street light I pause to take in
That tonight may be one of my last nights alone.
I blow you a kiss as you vanish for now
like a genie back into your lamp.
A chuckle. A wish. And on to The Angel
my bike leaves behind me a trail of stars.
