Coming Up For Air
Homecoming
is often
not what we have expected.
Rip van Winkle awakes:
an old man &
outlandish.
Take Orwell’s hero:
‘coming up for air’
he finds a depletion of oxygen;
And Mann’s Tonio
is almost arrested; -
he of the town’s First.
Only his dog
knew Ulysses. Strangers
live in my house.
Often
homecoming is not
what we have expected.
Is this jigsaw
my town? Only
some of the pieces fit.
(NOTE: In Thomas Mann’s short novel Tonio Kröger, Tonio who belonged to one of the town’s leading families draws suspicion on himself when he revisits his home-town.)
