THE POETRY SOCIETY is dedicated to the advancement of poetry as a living art. It encourages the writing and the speaking of it and, generally, aims to encourage the appreciation of poetry among the public at large. The Society is registered as a Charity and enjoys the support of the Arts Council of Great Britain, but it is chiefly dependent on the support of its own members.
The Society provides members with:
1. The Poetry Review, the leading quarterly journal of contemporary verse, reviews and criticism.
2. Recitals and lectures in London and at centres throughout the country.
3. Discussion groups which meet regularly at Earls Court Square.
4. Competitions for writers of poetry, including the Greenwood Award for the poem of the year.
5. A critical and advisory service.
6. Examinations in verse speaking for various awards culminating in the Society's Gold Medal.
7. A library of nearly 20,000 volumes.
Full membership of the Poetry Society is open to people over the age of 18. Young people below the age of 18 may apply for Associate Membership which entitles them to the same privileges at a reduced rate.
Affiliated or Corporate Membership is available to literary societies, libraries and educational establishments.
