Alfred Bishop
Icon
A woman with the will to live
struts out of the ocean,
leaving behind suicidal fish.
No angels of revenge back there,
only surrender,
and sanctuary for anybody dead.
Innocent again, thinking forward,
she flashes away on some crusade,
eager for justice and martyrdom.
Now she stands on Atlantic water
as the great colossus of America,
clutching a stone book and useless torch,
and resembling Elvis and Mona Lisa,
Marlon Brando and the Buddha,
a Jewish princess and a classical statue.
