Bluebells
They found your letters from the front
all sent before the battle
- the chirpings about Sunday grub
with extra rations and the strip the chaplain would wear
faithlessly before greeting the men
for every big push over. You left the stuff out
about Mary, I suppose it’s all now water
under the bridge. I’ll leave these daisies here
- you always said you’d rather
not see the roses left at your feet
that you’d give a girl. I gave Mary a pair of garters
with bluebells on in the finework.
I didn’t think you’d mind
after all you never were that sentimental.
And the blue as I see her part
her legs makes me think of all those heavens
going out at once under foreign clouds.
But you were the sod always said she would love
till the blood went right out of your head.
I’m sorry now you never wrote
what she was like, late at night. I wonder now
when I see her looking out in the darkness
for some underwear or what God only knows
she thinks she may unjustly have lost
what she thinks about. I only hear her heart
in the night, beating, sighing, long hauled
over fields, when I just want to hear her pant
and the cry when she says your name.
