Being familiar
with the spring wind
conceived like mushrooms
in a long shadow,
morning silences,
aria highlights
from the house next door,
above the hill by the farm,
setting you up
for a romantic ending
like those first love letters,
lets you remain infatuated
with the distance
of a late adolescent indifference,
where your skinny flesh
doubles over
in the reborn perennials
that windy Sunday
where language was peaceful
as in an undiscovered Rousseau,
wishing to sleep
on the greensward lawn
with the farmer’s fairest
who would believe the ordinary gods
for the saintly glistening April.
