Walking Away
He leads the way carrying a picnic
the children carry a lilo and snorkelling stuff
she the bathing suits and towels.
They follow eagerly at first
It’s alright here Dad ... What’s wrong with here?
They want to undress, swim
dredge rockpools and build the sand.
He moves doggedly ahead pretending
not to hear, his eyes fixed
on a shingle bar reaching
like a sword into the sea.
He turns, sees his tight-faced wife
and with cold anger drops
the picnic and walks away;
and she cannot see why
he should not just keep on
walking away forever.
