Tipping point
Mid month. After seven, gloom of evening,
picking beans half seen half felt. Geese,
clamourous above dried-up marshes, arrow
eastwards, puffed-out breaths of wing-beats
fade, swallowed into silence. Pink roses,
drooped against the wall, glow and simmer
fragile as sunset, tomatoes are elf green.
The year’s scales balance autumn and summer,
the pendulum pauses and the fulcrum shifts.
There is a shiver through the sycamores. Curtained
windows leak yellow, show up the solid house,
promise warmth, smoothness of wine, content
of sleep till morning when changed air will shine,
and spiders’ silk shimmer in the tilted light.
