Lighting Up
assy is all the packet says now.
Draggles of red and gold still left on card
that’s been soaked and dried and rinsed again.
Moments of angry dry desire
flare up, flicker a while, then
shrivel, die.
Something’s burrowed into the packet:
holes glint
with the gold that once wrapped cigarettes.
Splinters of light shiver from saxophone, percussion,
a gilded wreath around your head,
as, cigarette clamped to bottom lip, you vamp piano.
When I turn the packet over
I can see
there’s mud on it too.
