The Fortunate Isles
Separated from the mainland
By an indifference of sea,
The islands stand apart, yet joined
By the collective underworld
Of legend, myth and history.
Battered by ocean-stirring wind
And threatened by the rising tides
Of global warming, they stand firm
With a granite resolve, only
Giving ground as a last resort.
Conceived of the same stock within
And without, the islanders plough
An independent course with heart
Wild as sea and firm as granite
But always the same anchorage.
Travellers come and go, lapping
Up the warm stream of airs, the clear
Visionary light, enjoying
The idiosyncratic rocks,
The glowing heaths and holy vales
Lovers of the Fortunate Isles
Have that clear-sighted view into
The mysteries of shifting depths
Exploring and discovering
The crystal of each island.
