Mislaid
When a letter or a silver ring is lost
its absence demands hours of searching,
winding and re-winding
the tape of each earlier action.
It haunts, rubbishing the day,
turns dreams to nightmares,
labels every mirror:
Untidy. Useless. Give up.
Finally found, the homecoming
holds the joy of that one lost sheep.
When death bears no body
the search goes on in heart and head
day after day, year after year
for more than half a lifetime as if
somehow, somewhere he might still be found.
