In the same time zone
when the dance began
clasped together like the hands
of a clock
now I can’t place the hour
except your postcards
say it must be summer
the letters in the eaves
tell me I’m in Paris
you’re in Brazil
poles apart –
back together
laughing in spring snow
surfing through foam
riding the same wave
before you know it
two birds flutter down
from the ash tree
wither into autumn leaves
settle on the garden seat
you throw off your boots
rucksack at your feet
I can’t place the hour
don’t need a watch
to track your footsteps
in the winter stars
