Late Flowers
She gave him the sweetpeas. He kept smelling them
throughout the meal, favoured the whites with mauve frills.
As she rinsed the dishes he told her how the Japanese
wash up before they wash up. She slipped off
her rubber gloves, decided, for just this once,
not to wipe but wait till morning.
Getting ready for bed kept her legs covered,
splashed her face, her neck, checked her breath.
At breakfast remembered he liked his eggs unset,
like jelly, his bread thin-sliced, untoasted.
When he left she picked up the empty vase,
set it down, decided to leave it for a while
liking the quiet circle of water, the bluish light.
