for John Firefly
The wet dark seeps into what skin is bared
until the demarcation between body and night blurs
into the whir of tires over slick streets
and a distant train's low call.
Memory sleeps, its very absence a sign of forgiveness.
The only world spills forth in the slightest breeze
felt at hair's roots, the scent of newly cut grass,
and one firefly's beacon
proving the recesses that lie ahead.
