John Mole
Dawn Chorus
This is the wake-up call, when time
is all instinct, when hope
punches its weight in sound
and the future settles for now.
Whatever the day’s dark business
they ease it into light
without alarm. How it could turn out
is ringing in their voices
and nothing is more certain
than their early warning,
promises beyond interpretation
from each full throat.
