The lover's face
Gradual - like all mornings - stirred
by the kiss. A divide in the curtains
giving just enough to make him out.
A glint of unease. The lovers
face, true. But a voice somehow tinged.
She waits for familiar inflexions,
tone that will assure, smooth
the day’s complexities. She stops
her breath: vowels, syllables, pitch
all wrong, terribly wrong. The edges
of composure begin to slip.
She could revert to sleep, wake again,
from a dream perhaps. She checks -
the line of his nose, the long lobe,
one arched brow, right down to fingernails
where she finds a crescent-shaped
cuticle on a thumb that belongs
to a hand she has never known.
As her eyes scan the face she returns
the slow burn of his petrifying look.
