Changes
There was a time when we were just a pair of heads:
the one that hung above her cot like a frozen moon,
and the one that sang
while she suckled into heaven.
But before we knew it, our heads had grown stilts:
escapees from The War of the Worlds
on scraps of paper
Blu-tacked to the wall.
Now, we have hands with knife fingers;
we have penguin feet, pumpkin faces,
and the sun is an orange spider
in the top right hand corner of the sky.
Masterpieces in the cupboard under the stairs,
we treasure these days of black crayon;
the free sweep of a thick brush;
a time of infinite simile.
Soon, she’ll leave us at the school gate
for a world of ruler, rubber and compass;
where things must look only like themselves,
and we’ll wonder what will become of us.
