Wallace Stevens
Graduated from Harvard and New York Law School.
Aged fifty-five he made it big:
vice-president of Connecticut insurers.
A necessary subterfuge perhaps.
Carousing at some Florida shindig,
the heavyweight poet, sixteen stones,
vilified within earshot drink-fumed
Ernest Hemingway.
Literary imposter!
Invited outside Stevens, who fancied
himself a fighter, swung a right.
Only Connect! adjured E M Forster.
Stevens did.
Hemingway’s jaw broke his wrist.
The novelist floored the poet four times.
Sore, black-eyed and bandaged,
Stevens implored the bullish Hemingway
to spare his bruised reputation’s
ephemeral blushes.
Sure!
Hemingway lied. Then spilled the beans.
Papa’s idea of order at Key West
was licking the Emperor of Ice Cream.
