The letter
Occasionally, at close of working days,
they'd quaff a lager in a local bar
then linger over goodbyes at her car
before they drove off home their separate ways,
he married, she so gamine, just work mates
until the moment when their fingers met.
The car park saw them kissing in the wet.
Desire, an ache, gave rise to furtive dates
but then a letter stunned him at his desk,
anonymous, a threat to tell their boss.
Shown the sad scrawl, the smitten girl felt loss
when he said they were putting all at risk.
Someone had sussed their yearning, someone knew
and down the long years the question bugged them
......who?
