In the shadow and hour of today hides,
not speaking, the shadow of yesterday.
Such is the world: we don't see it long,
enough to remember what shines, and will fade,
to call out again and again, and tremble
to no longer see. So the poor man toils,
like someone on his knees who strives
to build against the wind a weak fire.
