Becoming My Father.
Working late into the night
I sense that,
little by little,
I am slowly becoming my father.
Staring furiously, irascibly, at the blank page
until I burn two piercing holes in my peace of mind;
always digging up more than I ever resolve.
Staring and staring, out of focus,
defiant, immutable;
refusing to concede to the inexorable return
of the minute hand to the top of the clock face,
the death of another day.
I will not be defeated by this mean-spirited world.
This tiny patch of all I know to which I am rooted
is unassailable, throw at me what you will -
God damn you, this is mine.
I can see his back, moving gradually away from me
in the distance, following his own father
as I follow him.
Waiting to be carried off at seventy-nine,
still beating out the same constant rhythm with his cane,
his foot, my head.
