The unborn
Mid-October reflections of summer,
delight in the voices of children, birds;
the moon speckled like an apricot, words
and lightning, the prologue to another
Christmas.
Breathe the quiet harvest of leaves
drifting downstream, the motionless of dreams;
follow the giant in his golden greaves
where only horses and hawks ride the streams
of consciousness to its end. "I'm lonely,"
says the man by the fire, quickening
into fear at footsteps that are only
echoes in the choir hall, mimicking
the speech of children unborn, unaware
of the dragon in his inviting lair.
